An Experiment in Controlled Vice

------------------

In 2000 Shreveport historian emeritus Eric J. Brock regaled the Tarshar Society with his history of the city’s St. Paul’s Bottoms, a district in which prostitution was legalized and controlled back in the early days of the 2oth century. Now, for the first time, the whole story of this noble experiment is chronicled in book form. Included with the history is an article reprinted from The Forum concerning the legal problems that cropped up during the years when madams and prostitutes lived alongside the city’s solid citizens. There are also a dozen pictures of the district and a few of its more flamboyant denizens. It’s a tale that has great relevance for solving the problems we face even today.
